Hype Over Substance at Shanghai's Bastard

Venue

Bastard, Beijing, China

Bastard had all the hallmarks of a place I wanted to like — it's the sort of venue that draws the Shanghai crowd, polished and fashionable.

But the experience fell short in nearly every way. The meal itself was quite disappointing, failing to justify the premium prices or the buzz surrounding the restaurant. What really stood out, though, was the wine service: my glass arrived warm, a basic oversight that set the tone for the rest of the evening. For a place positioning itself as upscale and trendy, these details matter. It felt less like a destination restaurant and more like somewhere people go to be seen rather than to eat well.
